Straight after IFA this year is the IBC Show, a trade-only event in Amsterdam. Although it is historically a broadcast equipment conference, in recent years it has been a showcase for up and coming consumer technologies such as IPTV, content management software and such new receiver hardware as DVB-T2 and DVB-S2.
Remote broadcast vans, satellite uplinks and other serious equipment has traditionally been the mainstay of the show. If you want to see what is hot for re-equipping broadcasters’ studios, IBC is the place. Amongst the fantastic equipment on show were Steadicam Segways for camera operators on the move and lots of LED-lit studio lights (for saving power and cooler studios). There were also plenty of LED backlit LCD panels, in both superb broadcast monitors and autocue displays (teleprompters).
However, one thing was scarce on the floor: 3D. Fujifilm had a rather neat 3D stereoscopic still camera and matching photo frame; JVC displayed both cameras and monitors. I also noticed a few 3D setups from small companies, but it was a rather limited presence.
If 3D really is happening in 2010, then there appears to be precious little broadcast capability for the format. Let the buyer beware.
