Sony Signals High Expectations for 3D TV, If Done Right

Kicking off the SID DisplaySearch Business Conference on Monday, Sony Electronics CEO Stan Glasgow provided some incredible 3D imagery (my favorite was scenery from Carnival in Rio). Glasgow’s intent was to show the industry how high-quality 3D can win over consumers (seeing is believing), while warning that poor quality 3D could result in setbacks that could result in this wave of 3D being a passing fad like it has in earlier 3D introductions.

But Glasgow maintained that Sony’s experience in educating consumers about 3D has shown potential, with two-thirds of consumers surveyed by Sony stating that their next set will be a 3D TV. Later this year, Sony plans to issue firmware upgrades to the Playstation 3 to play both 3D gaming titles and 3D Blu-ray discs.

The strong consumer reaction leads Sony to a very bullish outlook for 3D TV, with Glasgow predicting that sales of 3D capable TVs would pass 100 million units in three years! Quite a call to action for the industry.
