Good LCD TV Sales During China’s Golden Week National Holiday

According to a variety of sources, LCD TVs sales were up about 10% Y/Y during the National Day Golden Week in China, Oct 1-7. Gome, one of the largest national chain stores, officially announced its AV sales grew 16%, out-performing the average 15% during Golden Week. Local brands took share through aggressive promotion of high-end TVs and by using emerging channels such as specialty stores, group purchases, and online sales.

New Wave of Advanced-Generation TFT LCD Investment in China

Over the past few weeks, two advanced TFT LCD fabs—a Samsung Gen 7.5 in Suzhou and a LG Display Gen 8.5 in Guangzhou—were approved by the State Department of China. Formal approval by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) is expected soon.

Chinese TV Brands Lost Money During Slow Season

In a disclosure to investors on July 14, TCL indicated that it will post a loss for the first half of 2010 due to weaker than expected TV sales in China, inventory clearing, restructuring costs, and devaluation of the euro.

The company expressed confidence that financial results would improve in the second half, but the news shook both the TV and TFT LCD industries. There is speculation that most Chinese TV brands will post losses for Q2, the slowest quarter. In addition, Chinese TV makers have built up high inventories, and have been facing price pressure from foreign brands. Continue Reading
