India Cable TV: Go Digital or Go Blank
“Go digital or go blank” is the phrase used by Anil Khera, CEO of Bharat Business Channel, the Videocon Group-owned DTH service provider in India. The Indian DTH and cable industry is going through a period of digitalisation and growth. India’s cable TV network is to be digitised by December 2014, with the four metropolitan regions of Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai leading the way with digitisation scheduled for June this year. India Opens Up Foreign Investment in Multi-Brand Retail
Easily missed in the run-up to Black Friday in the US last week was a decision by the Indian government to allow 51% foreign ownership of multi-brand retail stores, as well as 100% ownership of single brand retail stores (for example, Apple stores). While Walmart and Metro, for example, currently operate in wholesale markets within India, they, as well as Carrefour, Tesco, and others, will be able to operate in India’s retail sector, estimated at $500 billion.

Indian Government Approves New Manufacturing Policy
The Indian government approved a long-debated manufacturing policy on October 25. The intent of the policy is to boost the country’s manufacturing capability; to increase the share of manufacturing from the current level of around 16% of GDP to 25% by 2022; and to create 100 million new jobs in special manufacturing hubs. This could be critical for India as an expected 130 million Indians will be joining the workforce, many of whom may not be qualified to participate in India’s growing software industry.
