Qualcomm mirasol in Consumer Hands in 1H’11; Building a New Fab in Taiwan

On January 6, Qualcomm MEMS Technologies announced that it will invest about $975 million to build a factory in Taiwan to produce its mirasol display technology. The facility is expected to be operational in 2012. This new fab will be next to the Gen 4.5 fab that Qualcomm and Foxlink have been operating since mid 2009. The new fab will use the same size glass substrates as the Gen 4.5 fab. Although Qualcomm didn’t announce the capacity, the new fab is expected to be much larger.

Foxconn Acquires Hitachi Display – Why?

Hitachi Displays has acknowledged that it is in discussions with Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. about “cooperation” in LCD manufacturing. This confirms a Nikkei report from earlier this week that Hon Hai will acquire a stake in Hitachi Displays by investing approximately $1.2 billion.

New Wave of Advanced-Generation TFT LCD Investment in China

Over the past few weeks, two advanced TFT LCD fabs—a Samsung Gen 7.5 in Suzhou and a LG Display Gen 8.5 in Guangzhou—were approved by the State Department of China. Formal approval by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) is expected soon.

First OLED Display over 100”

At CEATEC JAPAN 2009, Mitsubishi Electric unveiled a 155” large-scale organic light emitting diode (OLED) display called Diamond Vision. Mitsubishi recently announced it will start selling the Diamond Vision OLED on September 21, 2010. This will be the first large-scale OLED display system available.

It’s All for Sony? AUO and Wistron to Establish a JV for LCM in China

On August 20 2010 AUO and Wistron announced the establishment of a joint venture for  TFT LCD panel module manufacturing in Zhongshan, China. Total investment in the JV, tentatively named Zhongshan BriVision Optronics Corporation, is expected to be limited to $10 million; AUO will own 51% and Wistron will hold 49%.
