Qualcomm mirasol in Consumer Hands in 1H’11; Building a New Fab in Taiwan

On January 6, Qualcomm MEMS Technologies announced that it will invest about $975 million to build a factory in Taiwan to produce its mirasol display technology. The facility is expected to be operational in 2012. This new fab will be next to the Gen 4.5 fab that Qualcomm and Foxlink have been operating since mid 2009. The new fab will use the same size glass substrates as the Gen 4.5 fab. Although Qualcomm didn’t announce the capacity, the new fab is expected to be much larger.

SMD Impresses with AMOLED Portfolio

SMD’s (Samsung Mobile Display) booth at FPD International held in Makuhari, Japan on November 10-12 showed off a wide variety of AMOLEDs. The booth was impressive for the range of panels and technologies on display. These included an assortment of panels already in mass production, a high-quality 7.0” AMOLED for a future Galaxy Tab, and prototypes that included transparent displays, printed AMOLEDs, a 3D oxide semiconductor-based AMOLED, and flexible AMOLEDs.

Apple TV… Google TV… Smart TV… What About My TV?

Apple announced an update to its Apple TV product, which has been referred to as one of Steve Jobs’s hobbies. It will now be 1/4 the size of the previous generation, and 1/3 the price at $99. With no local storage, everything is streamed to the device via wired Ethernet or built-in 802.11n Wi-Fi. It has the requisite HDMI output along with optical audio and USB, and since the power supply is integrated, there’s no power brick either.

iPhone 4 Display Moves the Bar Higher

Apple’s announcement of the iPhone 4 at WWDC 2010 confirms the rumors that the display is 3.5” with a 960 x 640 pixel format (double VGA). This is the first time this format, and its resulting 324 dpi (dots per inch) display, is being mass produced. It is an impressive breakthrough.

Your Next Textbook: An Apple iPad

On March 30, Seton Hill University in Greensburg, Pennsylvania announced that all students will receive a 13″ MacBook laptop and an iPad. Seton Hill is not the only university embracing the iPad: George Fox University in Newberg, Oregon will offer incoming freshmen a choice of a new MacBook or the iPad.
